"Furiosa" Falls Short of Expectations

When you ask me about some of my favorite movies, "Mad Max: Fury Road" tops my list. It's a film I bonded over with my dad, and its story holds an extraordinary place in my heart. That said, I felt very qualified to critique the recent prequel: "Furiosa."

furiosa movie review

I'll be honest: the film did not live up to my expectations. While "Furiosa" showcased one of the most amazing characters in the Mad Max universe, it lacked the charm and quality of its predecessor. Anya Taylor-Joy was good in the titular role, delivering a powerful performance that captured Furiosa's essence, but I honestly expected a little more. I'm not sure exactly what I wanted, but I just felt like something was missing. Chris Hemsworth, on the other hand, honestly made this movie. While his character was very Thor-esque and reminded me of other roles he has played, I thoroughly enjoyed his performance and thought he did an amazing job. I looked forward to seeing his character on screen and thought that it added a lot to Furiosa's story.

The film did an excellent job of exploring her origins, revealing where her anger and motivation came from, and providing numerous callbacks to the first movie that fans will appreciate.

However, the film's slow build was a drawback for me. It didn't have the same electrifying score that made "Fury Road" so memorable. The absence of the iconic music and score left a noticeable void for me. Perhaps because this movie is a prequel, the music that played during big battle scenes hadn't yet been introduced in the Mad Max universe. I felt that a more vibrant soundtrack could have heightened the drama and made the scenes more impactful.

Despite these shortcomings, the fighting scenes were still very cool. I especially liked how they incorporated flight into some of the action sequences, adding a new dimension to the combat. The film was fun and engaging, yet it didn't quite do its predecessor justice. But then again, it is hard to compare and surpass such a masterpiece as "Mad Max: Fury Road."

In conclusion, while "Furiosa" has its moments and Anya Taylor-Joy's performance shines, it ultimately falls short of the high bar set by "Fury Road." Fans of the franchise will find enjoyment in it, but it may not fully satisfy those hoping for the same level of intensity and innovation as its predecessor.
