In case you haven’t heard, Sydney Sweeney is cancelled, and the box office reflected that with poor performance during the opening weekend of her biopic, Christy. While I had the day off, I decided to drive to a theater that was showing this film, because I really wanted to check it out.

I was completely surprised to find that I enjoyed this film. This was a remarkable performance by Sweeney. While I will admit I feel like she normally gets roles that show off how hot she is, this one did not do that — and she pulled it off so well. Sydney Sweeney playing a closeted butch lesbian boxer was never something I imagined her doing, but it was so good.
Biopics are normally hit or miss for me, but this one was a huge hit. Honestly, because it fucking hurt. This is my blog, so I’m going to take the time to write this review the way I want.
I knew going into the film that Sweeney’s character was a victim of abuse, but I don’t think I’ve seen emotional abuse from a partner portrayed in a way that I’ve related to like this. I think this story just resonated with me a little bit more. I’ve been with guys before who made me feel trapped like that. I once felt trapped in a relationship like that. I was young, and I didn’t know any better. Anytime I tried to leave, I was met with threats of him killing himself.
Sweeney’s character didn’t even know who she was in life: she was just trying to make the people around her happy. Her character kind of sucked at some points, sure, but she was a victim of the people she was trying so hard to appease. This movie, and the life of Christy Martin, is crazy to reflect on, and it kind of hurts to think about how long people spend living their lives not really doing what they want or being themselves. It really pains me to reflect on, but for a movie to still hit me after I’ve left the theater… that’s a sign of a job well done.
Genuinely, Sweeney’s performance was great. She’s more than just really hot: she’s a great actor.
I would recommend this film! If you see it, let me know what you think.
