Most of my friends know that I'm a huge horror fan; it's kind of my M.O. I will watch anything and everything scary, as long as the reviews aren't too bad. When I found out that my girl SYDNEY SWEENEY was in a horror movie, I dragged my friend Sarah to the movies to see it on opening night. Let's discuss.

Coming into this movie, I opted not to watch the trailer. I figured it would be riddled with spoilers, and I wanted to stay surprised. I had an idea of what the movie was about. I figured given the title, it had something to do with some miraculous, religious birth.
Overall, this movie was kind of the same old-same old when it comes to horror movies. You've got:
Nuns.
A mysterious, foreign setting
A main character looking for a fresh start
Religious horror
You take all these ingredients and overall, you get another run-of-the-mill horror movie. Granted, while this movie was pretty generic, the thing that set this movie apart was its gore. Despite its rather lacking plot, this was an incredibly visually disturbing film. One review on Twitter described it best, stating that it was "diabolical, sacrilegious, pure evil, and grossly offensive. It is profane & has a third act that spits in the face of all that is holy. Just...evil." This review honestly summarizes it well. I'm not normally squeamish, but the blood and the gore in this movie had me on the edge of my seat. I was quite literally shocked and appalled by the ending of this movie, that I had to sit in my seat for most of the credits before I left.
Quite honestly, and I don't normally say this, but I wouldn't recommend this movie. While Sydney Sweeney was a phenomenal scream queen in this film, overall the plot was just pretty blah. Save your money for another horror movie coming up this year like Abigail (April 19th,) Cuckoo (May 3rd,) The Strangers: Chapter 1 (May 17th,) and The Watcher (June 14th.)
